American Craft Week Begins October 7th

American Craft Week celebrations begin on Friday, October 7. We are calling this special day, "Clay Day", and will be offering a 20% savings on any item in the gallery made from clay.

Smith Galleries on Hilton Head features the Prayer Towers of Holden McCurry

Smith Galleries is pleased to exhibit the Prayer Towers of Carolina clay artist Holden McCurry.

Holden writes..."I began making clay towers and shrines in the spring of 2011 after a trip to Mexico. Inspiration came from the colorful and creative forms found in the local artwork and architecture. Soon, my work evolved and I started making Prayer Towers."

The towers come in three sizes and each includes a hollow opening in the tower with a slip of paper to write a prayer, thought, wish or dream for someone you care about and then gift them with the tower and you special thought.

The towers are thoughtful gifts for weddings, anniversaries, graduations, valentines, birthdays, get well soon, thinking of you and they are a great way for a guy to propose!

Soleri Windbells at Smith Galleries

Soleri windbells have been a favorite at Smith Galleries since the day the gallery opened in 1988. Designed by world famous architect, Paolo Soleri, and cast in bronze, they will ring and give pleasure for generations.

Elizabeth Garvin Jewelry Exhibition Held Over

Elizabeth writes..."I draw inspiration as much from industrial objects and processes as from nature and its examples of repetition and geometry. I am intrigued by design that is reduced to its simplest form, where all unnecessary elements have been removed and all that is left is the essence of the idea."

Elizabeth graduated with honors from New York University in 1986, earning a bachelor of Arts degree, with further studies at Parsons School of Design and Massachusetts College of Art.

Mary + Lou Ann featured at Smith Galleries

Smith Galleries is known for fine handcrafted jewelry and Mary Filapek and Lou Ann Townsend are unique examples of the Jewelry featured in the gallery. The gallery is featuring a special show of their work during the month of October.

Mary Filapek and Lou Ann Townsendare both trained silversmiths who met while they were students at the University of New Mexico. Their work is truly collaborative and they share equally in all aspects of design and production.

They design and produce jewelry in sterling silver, inlaid with polymers. They fabricate the metal framework of each piece in sterling or use a mixture of cast and fabricated sterling components. All cast components are created from masters that they have fabricated themselves in silver and copper or carved from wax. The color process is a mixture of both liquid and clay polymers. They create colors primarily through oil pigments and integrate both synthetic and organic materials, such as sugar or sand, to create texture. Take a peek.

Smith Galleries is known for fine woodworking and the fine woodworking of Kovecses Designs fits perfectly in the gallery mix. Joe and Karen Kovecses create contemporary ikebana vessels as well as small boxes and bowls. All have a very modern oriental feel. Some of the woods that are used would be termed exotics with bubinga, wenge and zebra being the predominant choices. Curly maple is often used with the clean light wood contrasting beautifully with the darker exotics.

Laura Hutchcroft is a featured artist at Smith Galleries. Laura Hutchcroft's jewelry is a combination of precious and non-precious materials, exploring form, structure, and balance. Her work takes it’s inspiration from a diverse assortment of influences; the natural environment, architecture, fashion, music, and solitude. All of which provide infinite potential for creativity. These influences have culminated in what can only be described as an eclectic collection of jewelry. Visually and structurally she strives to achieve rhythm by the simplest means, creating ornaments that compliment the body.

Laura's designs emerge through material exploration and experimentation. Made by manual processes, sawing, filing, shaping, and coaxing, these low-tech processes keep her in physical contact with my materials, an important element of my play. Jewelry as art is open to interpretation; the objects are imparted with meaning and value through the wearer’s attachment and association. By becoming part of the wearer’s experience and personal expression Laura's work is transformed and completed.

Mary and Lou Ann are inspired by the awesome power and potential of the atom. Chemistry, cellular structure, DNA, mathematics, spirituality, the nature of reality and our planetary travels provide the primary sources of fodder for color, form and texture. They are drawn to exploring the void in our work. The void is the space between breathes/atoms.

Judith Neugebauer show opens at Smith Galleries

Judith Neugebauer's jewelry is a favorite at Smith Galleries. We are pleased to present this special exhibition of her jewelry during May and June.

Judith writes..."A previous career in classical ballet and theater instilled within me a deep awareness and appreciation for movement, line and balance. These are the classical qualities I have always tried to incorporate into my jewelry designs...and in my life."

My work is individually fabricated using sterling silver with an overlay of 23K gold leaf. Many pieces also incorporate freshwater pearls and Australian boulder opals set in 22kt gold. Die-formed hollow elements create visual depth, yet the overall concern with lightness and movement remain central to my approach. A recent development has been the use of oxidized, sandblasted sterling silver with 23kt gold leaf to create an even more dramatic surface."

No one does color in contemporary glass jewelry better than Jane Barthelemy, founder and designer of Marco Polo Design. She creates each design, meticulously blending sumptuous hues and forms together, using a wide variety of materials and techniques. She studies fashion color forecasts each season, careful sculpting the color statement for each collection to integrate changing fashions and color preferences. Jane says: "I love the process of making a completely new color statement each season. I usually introduce one dominant new color, and look for unusual ways to combine two or more colors to create a fresh vibration."

Smith Galleries is pleased to announce that it now features the largest selection of art by watercolor artist Barry Honowitz either in gallery or online. See a slide show here of pieces currently available.

Barry was a good neighbor of Smith Galleries for several years at The Village at Wexford before he closed his gallery in the spring of 2009.

In 1987 Barry Honowitz moved from Southern California to Hilton Head Island to further his love for watercolor painting. Barry’s work hangs in many corporate as well as private collections throughout the country. Barry is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. His background in design and advertising can be seen in paintings and promotional lithographs. He has more than 35 nationally published watercolors with images ranging from waterfowl to Harbour Town lighthouse on Hilton Head.

Smith Galleries has just received our first selection of the fabulous felt ornaments by Nicole Golden. We fell in love with them the moment we saw them. See them all here.

A life-long artist and maker of things, Nicole Golden created her hand-sewn goods company, Pea Soup, in 2004. Pea Soup is a little studio of bugs and elves and blossoms and fairies. All of these goodies are made with wool felt, tiny stitches and Nicole's two hands. She chooses to needlecraft with felt because she loves the way it translates her ideas and she loves the combinations of colors and textures. She strives to make her work “accessible” to everyone – young and old, lovers of art, admirers of good craftsmanship and those that just fall in love with a particular design or feeling of a piece.

Her goal is to make beautiful, unique art that brings joy to those who buy it and wear it - whether it’s a gift for a friend or something special for themselves. Folk art is a special part of our history and culture and making these small creations for everyday enjoyment is a lovely way to keep it alive.

Carolyn Zakarija's jewelry is once again being featured at Smith Galleries.

Carolyn is originally from London, England, and now lives in Pennsylvania. She received her Bachelor of Arts Honors Degree from Middlesex University in London in 1980.

Carolyn's inspiration for her work is drawn from the immediate environment. Some pieces have a simplicity of form, others deliver a humorous "narrative" message.

The entire line of work is made of sterling silver, with gold filled accents. Each piece is carefully made by hand, with various surface decorations, made by hammering or rolling mill impressions using various materials.

Smith Galleries is featuring the art of Natalya Romanovsky as part of a special exhibition at the gallery. See slide show of entire exhibition.

As an artist Romanovsky places a lot of emphasis on design. She sees beauty in the world and sets out to capture it through paintings that stress harmony between color and form.

"I want to transform the beauty around me into shapes. I try to think of my work as a process of simplifying something huge into a manageable pattern."

Through her art she attempts to create these patterns being careful not to tame the wilder energies of life. Art should always have a little mystery in it. In her paintings a mysterious and intriguing ambiance exists, reminiscent of something surrealistic leaving the viewer to find a simple meaning of life in each work.

Virginia Wood loves the lyrical nature of her work.

"Music is very important to me and it influences the way I create. My art is visual music and I build the pieces stroke by stroke the way a song is built note by note. Whether I'm working alone or in a busy studio I simply get into a composition and then flow with it."

Wood is also fascinated by the subtle shifts in form within a kaleidoscope and often imitates the effect with her pastels and monoprints.

John & Elli Milan's Art is on Exhibit at Smith Galleries

Smith Galleries is featuring the art of John and Elli Milan as part of a special exhibition at the gallery. See slide show of entire exhibition.

Pictured at left is a mixed media painting on heavy black archival paper. The image is 12" x 24" and paper is 22" x 30". See larger view.

The Milan's credit their success as artists to their, "love of Life and Faith in God." Through their paintings the artists invite people to look deeper and smile as they enjoy what art brings to their life. John says, "My faith in God is my strength. He's inspired and directed me in my work since childhood." Elli says, "sharing the creative process allows us to grow together in our relationship and our faith." Woven into the fabric of their abstract compositions are hints of narrative, mysterious little stories with whimsical imagery that reflect their positive outlook on life.

The Milans create their paintings together. Through years of studying and creating art they have developed many innovative techniques, the most significant of which is the ability to work together in a creative spirit. Although John and Elli are both accomplished artists in their own right their collaboration brings out a side of their work that nether could reach on their own.

Deborah Close Jewelry Featured at Smith Galleries

Smith Galleries has just received a new collection of jewelry from Deborah Close. The gallery has featured Deborah's work for several years. Her work is characterised as elegant design using beautiful stones and expertly crafted sterling silver enhancements. The necklace and earrings shown at left feature black onyx and green turquoise.

Deborah writes..."It is my interest in beauty and order that drives the artistic decisions I make when creating jewelry. The shape and color of the stones, the form and texture of the metals, the linear movement and negative space in the composition are considerations that determine how a piece of jewelry will ultimately look. Creativity is problem solving. Here is the problem; black onyx stone, hammer and saw. I solve the problem in a way that is unique to me. As my personal journey moves in new directions, so does my art. Although the problem is the same (metal. stone, hammer, saw), the solution is always different."

Joan Z Horn Summer Exhibition at Smith Galleries

We have just received a special summer collection of jewelry from our favorite jeweler...Joan Z Horn. Following are a few words written by Joan about her life and work.

"In my studio I fabricate each piece of jewelry. I create individual elements from Sterling Silver and 14Kt. Gold, using traditional and innovative hand tools. My bench contains tubing jigs that are like old friends. My metal starts out as flat sheet, round, square and flat wire, and tubing. I solder individual elements together using an acetylene/oxygen torch. I enhance pieces with freshwater pearls and semi-precious stones, making color combinations with Garnet, Blue Topaz, Citrine, Peridot, Iolite and Amethyst. My jewelry pieces are studies in line, color and movement.

I love working in my studio, and my hands feel most at home when they have a pair of pliers in them. Tools that were never intended for jewelry lead me into whole new directions. I question my auto mechanic about devices he uses. When the plumber comes for household repairs I inspect his tubing cutters and torch tip. A tube wringer from a dental supply catalog inspires new lines of jewelry. I visualize everything in the world as if it were a piece of jewelry. Musical notes from the sheet music in choir become a brooch pattern. Gates in Barcelona become a pendant. Other loves include riding my bike, baking bread, choir and traveling.

I was born and raised in New York. I graduated with a BFA in Metalsmithing from Tyler School of Art, Temple University.

Kara Raymond Jewelry Featured at Smith Galleries.

Kara Raymond uses the unique patterned metal technique called "Mokume Gane" in her jewelry design. The technique was developed in Japan in the 17th century and it was originally developed to create decorative handles on samurai swords.

"Mokume Gane" is made by stacking 16-22 alternating layers of different metals, approximately two inched thick. The stack is clamped between steel plates and placed in a blacksmith's furnace. The careful control of the heat and pressure results in the metal layers fusing to each other.

The stack is hot forged down on an anvil. The unique patterns are developed by carving down through the layers. The sheet is then rolled down thinner to reveal the patterns. The carving and rolling is repeated many times to create the final patterns. The color hues in the metals are the result of varying the heat, oxidation, and patinas.

Victoria Varga Jewelry Exhibition at Smith Galleries

Jewelry by Victoria Varga has been a mainstay at Smith Galleries for many years. The gallery is now featuring a special exhibition of her work. See slide show or still pictures.

Victoria received her BS in fine arts from Skidmore College in 1984. After completing her graduate studies in metals at Syracuse University she moved to New York City with her husband, Daniel Brouder, where the couple co-founded the studio that bears her name. After fourteen years in Manhattan Daniel and Victoria relocated their studio to the coast of Maine where they continue to hand fabricate jewelry of Victoria’s design. From her early years in New York Victoria has crafted jewelry that combines precious metals with a variety of materials that are often discounted as
ordinary.

Victoria has perfected a process of combing sterling silver, 23 karat gold leaf, resin, crushed stone and common artist pigments to create her signature line of jewelry. Instantly recognized for its timeless good looks, Varga jewelry delights both men and woman with its innovative combination of unexpected materials and whimsical design.

Simply beautiful and classically romantic, Philippa Roberts jewelry makes a woman feel purely feminine.

Her daily walks along the coast of the pacific ocean with her husband, Brian, their dog, Maggie, and their daughter Charlotte inspire much of her creativity. From the clean, blue stones in many of her pieces to the simple replication of a dragonfly on a necklace, her work stems from the nature around her. Yet she also incorporates a feeling of the urban, with lines and patterns that imitate architecture and design seen around the city.

Having started with a basic sterling silver and pearl design, she has expanded her line by integrating silver and gold with different colored stones, adding texture, shape and hue to many of her designs. Philippa creates all the original pieces by carving in wax or fabricating in metal.
using silver as her main medium, Philippa creates necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings that can be worn formally or informally, with an appeal to all ages.

Thom Kellam has been featured in the gallery for all 21 years. Thom is a woodworker specializing in fine handmade jewelry boxes. The box shown here is made from cherry and has four drawers that slide in both directions. It measures 12" x 6" x 7" and is $535.

Smith Galleries has just received a new selection of ceramic pins by the nationally recognised artist, Cynthia Chung. Cynthia has perfected a very tedious millefiori technique of working with various colors of clay to form interesting patterns and color combinations.

Her work is collected around the world and it is totally unique to her. No one has tried to copy her work because it is just too difficult.

The porcelain frog "Leapy" shown at left is fabulous. "Leapy" measures 4 1/2 x 2x3/8 inches. Rings on his front feet may be used to attach him to a necklace (also made by Cynthia).

Judith came to jewelry making after studying and performing classical ballet as well as performing in musical theater. Her awareness of form, line, and movement are obvious in the fluid lines of her jewelry. Created in sterling silver with 23k gold leaf, Judith's work has qualities that make it both dramatic and elegant. Using sterling and oxidized sterling in combination with die-formed hollow elements to create visual depth, Judith maintains lightness and movement while creating jewelry with substance. My bottles, although small in scale, make a grand statement.
I see perfume bottles as small, elegant treasures; made to be turned, touched, and relished. I strive to make the form organic, smooth, and familiar, with very few sharp angles. The lip is simple and unobtrusive. The interior decoration adds life, movement, and dimension to the piece."

Well, the bottom line is that the print and media advertising we have been doing all these years is very expensive and it is just plain out of date with the times. Think about all the magazines and newspapers that get thrown in the landfill every day. Print is not eco-friendly!

Plus, print media is slow...we design an ad one month in advance of magazine publication and then the ad is out there for a month. With the web, we can change our website every few minutes.

Kaleidoscopes at Smith Galleries

Smith Galleries features one of the finest selections of kaleidoscopes you will ever see. The gallery is located on beautiful Hilton Head Island and is open Monday through Saturday between the hours of 10 and 6.

The kaleidoscope shown here is called "Inversion" and it is made by Henry Bergeson. It is a two mirror scope which has its own internal light source. Just push the brass button and the internal light comes on revealing the brightly lit object chamber. It is made of birdseye maple and bubinga and comes with three interchangeable object chambers. It stands 12 inches tall and is $840.

Smith Galleries features the art glass of many contemporary American glassblowers. Christian Thirion has an unusual story in that he grew up in France and was trained as a professional pastry chef like his father. Life brought him to the United States in 1980 where he started a restaurant and through a set of circumstances developed an interest in glass. "If you can't stand the heat. get out of the kitchen." That's an apt saying for many people, but not for Christian Thirion. He left the kitchen and a career as a master pastry chef, for the hot shop and a new career as a glassblower. "Chocolate," he explains, "is liquid and then becomes hard. Glass is a similar concept." Pictured is one of his "taco" bowls.

Smith Galleries has featured the Plexiglas clocks of Addison and Eric Paige for several years. The Plexiglas clocks are made in their studio called "What Will the Neighbors Think". They are now making a brand new collection of steel clocks under the name of "Ravenrock Artworks".

Addison and Eric are a brother-sister duo. They begin these new clocks with powder coated laser cut steel shapes which they paint in a variety of ways with acrylic paints. The colors and textures they achieve yield a very organic look as they reflect colors from nature. "Sentinel I" shown at left is 30"x 5"x 2" and is $360.

Peggy Karr Glass at Smith Galleries

Peggy Karr Glass is a long time favorite at Smith Galleries. Pictured is her 12" square platter in the Fish School pattern. This is just one of many delightful patterns. Each piece is made by hand by dusting glass enamels through stencils onto a plate of glass. A second piece of special glass called fused glass is layered on top and then it is put in a slump mold and placed in a kiln. The piece is heated to 1600 degrees at which point the two layers fuse together.
Peggy Karr Glass is a very popular gift item. And each piece is made in America which makes them even more popular in this day and age.

Dewey Cats at Smith Galleries

Mary Gates Dewey's cats are handmade of clay and the colors and patterns are produced by an ancient method of firing called sawdust or "pit" firing. Once the piece has been bisque fired in a kiln, it is buried in sawdust and the sawdust is burned. The smoke from the sawdust produces the permanent colors in the clay. Sizes vary slightly and color patterns are random. We have known Mary Gates Dewey since the early 70's when she visited Wally's pottery studio which was in Tennessee at that time. Mary's cats, which we have featured for several years, have been continuously sought after by collectors and cat lovers.

Lee Coulter Wind Machines

Lee Coulter Wind Machines are now showing at Smith Galleries on Hilton Head Island. Born in Chicago, Lee eventually settled along the central coast of California in the late 70's, where he began an apprenticeship as a jeweler. After working as a jeweler into the mid 80's, he branched out into sculpture in stone and metals. His main focus now as an artist are fantastic wind machines. Each sculpture is handcrafted of copper and brass, insuring a quality that is guaranteed unconditionally. Wind is caught by copper 'wind cups'. This work is substantial enough to use on top of a roof, yet the graceful and hypnotic spinning motion lends an air of elegance wherever it is installed. All kinetic sculpture is available on a 3' copper pipe stand complete with materials for installation in your garden.

The work of artist Heather Judge is always a favorite at Smith Galleries. Ms. Judge is known for her beautiful collage assemblies that feature heavy texture, real flowers and leaves and beautiful color. Sticks mirrors are a favorite at Smith Galleries. We received this fabulous medium size mirror today which features many of the things that make Hilton Head Island famous as well as depicting a few of the things Islanders enjoy doing. We also received this mirror today which is also great for beach lovers.

These two mirrors each measure 24 inches wide and are 33 inches high. They are perfect for our island homes and serve to remind us why we love the beach.

I could not wait to tell you about this new Rolled Arm Bench by Sticks that arrived in the gallery on Friday. It is fabulous! It would be beautiful in many places in your home but I think it is perfect for the end of a bed. The top is upholstered in leather and the drawings are accented with stitching.
The words that go around the rail are "Listen In On Shells, Put Living Things Back, Carry A Bucket, Ebb and Flow, Leave No Wake, Sugar Yourself With Sand, Cultivate Quiet, Practice Simplicity." The price is $2,420.

Marti Hughes is one of our favorite artists who lives here on Hilton Head Island. We met her through our church. She dropped by Smith Galleries today with this piece titled "Simple Pleasures" which shows a local family having a picnic on a sandy area near the marsh. I love the images of the children flying kites as I (Wally) too like to fly kites. It is a fun piece with positive imagery. It makes me want to pack a picnic basket. What is your favorite food item to go in your picnic basket? Mine is fried chicken.
The painting is acrylic on canvas and measures 16" x 20". It is offered framed at $650.

Colby Smith Door Knockers

Colby Smith door knockers are an elegant addition to your home's entry. They are all hand cast in solid brass by Colby himself here in the United States. What began at an evening high school foundry course in 1976 has evolved into a studio craft that makes these original door knockers a functional art form. This craftsmanship is distinguished by: multiple metal casting methods, alloys, finishes and patinas, mechanical and welded assembly and hand-tooled texture and detail. Production is limited to the finishing done by Colby and his wife, Jane. Each piece is signed. They will last for generations and each comes with all necessary hardware. All I Really Need to Know I Learned From Noah's Ark

This blog entry is a bit different from my (Wally) norm, but it seems appropriate as we look forward to the new year. My Sunday School class is currently studying Genesis where the story of Noah is found in chapters 6 through 9. Following are a few things that can be learned from the story.
1. Don’t miss the boat.
2. Don’t forget that we’re all in the same boat.
3. Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.
4. Stay fit. When you’re six hundred years old, someone might ask you to do something REALLY big.
5. Don’t listen to critics; just get on with what has to be done.
6. Build your future on high ground.
7. For safety’s sake, travel in pairs.
8. Two heads are better than one.
9. Speed isn’t always an advantage; the snails were on board with the cheetahs.
10. When you’re stressed, float awhile.
11. Remember that the ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic was built by professionals.
12. Remember that woodpeckers inside are a larger threat than the storm outside.
13. No matter the storm, when God is with you, there’s a rainbow waiting.

About once a year, a box shows up at Smith Galleries containing new paintings by Mike Smith. Mike is our most popular artist and it is always exciting to open the box to see his latest creations. This group contains six new originals...five watercolors and one oil. "Bills Plane" (10"x 10")shown at left is in our opinion one of the best pieces of Mike's we have seen. "Fjord" is equally good and is also 10" x 10".
